About the Gurung and Magar Community

The Gurung and Magar communities are the locals of the Annapurna region, starting from Ghandruk to Manang, Mustang. The Gurung and Magar communities stand out as two of the most significant and historically important indigenous groups of the Himalayas. These communities are known for their bravery, traditions, and harmonious lifestyles. They have played a vital role in shaping Nepal’s cultural identity.

Gurung Community

The Gurung people are also known as Tamu. The Gurung language is a part of the Sino-Tibetan family and is still spoken by many, though Nepali is widely used in daily life. Historically, the Gurungs were pastoralists and traders, but over time, they became well-known for their service in the British and Indian Gurkha regiments, earning them a reputation as brave warriors. Their faith is a blend of Bon, Buddhism, and Hinduism, creating a unique spiritual identity. Gurung men wear a short shirt called bhoto with a white cloth called kachhad, while women often wear colorful blouses with shawls and ornaments.

Magar Community

Magar community is one of the oldest communities in Nepal. They are found in the Nepal sidderent hills and mountains region, like Palpa, Rolpa, Rukum, Pyuthan, Baglung, and the different places of the Annapurna region as well. The Magar language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman family, and it is widely spoken by the Magar people. Historically, they were influential in the political and military history of Nepal, playing important roles in the unification campaigns of King Prithvi Narayan Shah and later serving in the Gurkha armies.

Traditionally, the Magars community people engaged in agriculture and animal rearing. They are hardworking farmers, often cultivating maize, millet, and rice in hilly terraces. Magars follow a mix of shamanism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and animism, with rituals performed by shamans (Jhankri).

Similarly, fall offers consistent weather conditions with moderate temperatures and a bright sky, allowing for beautiful vistas of the mountains and lush landscapes.

While some may like the unique challenges of trekking during the monsoon season (June to August), marked by heavy rains and probable route obstructions, others may prefer winter owing to freezing weather and the chance of snow blocking higher passes. Planning the hike around these peak seasons guarantees pleasant weather and adventure. You can read out detailed blog on Best time to visit Annapurna region.

So, we suggest you to book trekking with reputed company they will provide you the genuine information as well follow the standard safty practices during trek.

Can I do a solo trek during the Annapurna Circuit trek?

No, you cannot do solo trekking in the Annapurna circuit trek, as it's banned from 2024, considering the trekkers' safety, as when trekkers used to trek solo, they often got confused with the navigation. Also, there was a high altitude risk. If you are a solo trekker, at least get a guide for yourself, and then trek so that you can complete the trek safely. You can also join our fixed departures, where we have trekkers going for the trek every week 2/3 times, which will help you with safety as well.

Side Trips during the Annapurna Circuit Trek

What does our guide, Pemba Sherpa, say about the Annapurna Circuit Trek?

Our guide, Pemba Sherpa, says that “the trek is not just about reaching Thorong La Pass (5,416 m); it is also about the journey through local villages, interacting with Gurung, Thakali, and Tibetan-influenced communities, and witnessing ancient monasteries and sacred sites like Muktinath Temple. I believe that these cultural encounters are what make the Annapurna Circuit stand out from other treks in Nepal.

FAQs

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is a renowned trekking route in Nepal's Annapurna region. It traverses diverse landscapes and offers breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains like Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu. The trek also provides insight into the local culture, including Gurungs, Thakalis, and Manangis. It's considered one of the world's most beautiful and challenging treks, attracting trekkers from around the globe.

ACT trek is short form of Annapurna circuit trekking.

The Annapurna Circuit Trek typically takes 12 to 21 days, depending on your route, pace, and acclimatization needs. The distance covered ranges from 160 to 230 kilometers, with several high passes and rest days. Allocating enough time is crucial to avoid altitude sickness and fully enjoy the experience. Now as per latest update on April 2025, total trekking distance is 65KM.

The best times for the Annapurna Circuit Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer clear skies, mild temperatures, and stunning views. However, there are also peak trekking seasons, so bookings are essential.

Now, due to global warming effects, the best time for trekking changes every year, so you need to make inquiries to trekking agencies about current situations on the route.

Note: You will need a restricted area permit for Manaslu circuit trekking.

The Annapurna circuit trek is considered moderate to challenging. Difficulty arises from long hiking days (5–9 hours), high altitude (up to 5,416 m at Thorong La Pass), and unpredictable weather. While the trail is well-established with teahouses, altitude sickness is a risk, and you should be prepared for both steep ascents and descents.

Yes, a beginner can do the Annapurna circuit trek if he/she have Good cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, and endurance. Hiring a guide can also help manage pace, acclimatization, and navigation.

No, you cannot do the Annapurna circuit trek in 7 days, as you will need to trek to the highest altitude, and completing the trek in 7 days means risking your body for the AMS. It's also very rushed and strenuous.

Yes, you will need a sleeping bag for the Annapurna circuit trek as temperatures can drop below freezing at high-altitude lodges and the blankets provided may not be sufficient to cope with the cold.

Yes, the Annapurna circuit is harder than Kilimanjaro due to the longer, higher, and more demanding trek, whereas Kilimanjaro is a shorter climb (5–8 days) but steeper.

You will need to be very fit physically and mentally for the Annapurna circuit, as you will be trekking to the highest point of 5416 meters, and to reach there, you will need long hikes, cardio, and strength.

The hardest treks in the world are:

  • Everest Base Camp via North Route
  • Karakoram Pass Trek (Pakistan)
  • Annapurna Sanctuary (Nepal)
  • Drakensberg Traverse (South Africa)

The success rate of the Annapurna circuit is  80 to 90% according to the local communities and guides. The official report has not been published yet.

Till now, there is 0 death report for the Annapurna circuit, as it's just a trek, but there is a death rate of more than a hundred when people have climbed Mount Annapurna.

Both the ABC and Annapurna circuit treks are best. You can decide considering some facts like;

  • Lush landscapes, Annapurna range views, and lower altitude in ABC
  • Longer (14–21 days), diverse landscapes, high passes, cultural variety, and remote villages in the Annapurna circuit

The money to take on the Annapurna circuit depends on the Budget, duration, comfort level, and extras. Generally, you will be spending 40 to 50 USD per day.

You sleep in teahouses/lodges along the Annapurna circuit.

No, you will not need a tent for the Annapurna circuit because the tea houses and accommodations are available throughout the trek with basic facilities welcoming guests from around the world.

Generally, you will need from 11 to 18 days, depending on the starting point you choose, the drive back point you choose, and the vehicle options you choose to return to your destinations.

Yes, you will have wifi options during the Annapurna circuit; however, you might need to pay an extra amount for using wifi, and at high altitudes like Thorong Phedi, you might not get wifi.

The best place to start the Annapurna circuit is from Besi Sahar, which is easily accessible from Kathmandu by bus or jeep. Some opt for Bhulbhule or Jagat to shorten the trek.

No, you cannot do the Annapurna circuit without a guide, as from 2024, the Nepal government has a mandatory rule to have a guide to complete your trek in the Annapurna region.

Both Manaslu and the Annapurna circuit are best for you. It depends upon your persona choice, considering some facts like:

  • Annapurna Circuit is Popular, with established teahouses and diverse landscapes.
  • Manaslu Circuit is Less crowded, remote, slightly higher, and requires special permits

The shortest time to do the Annapurna circuit is 10/12 days, which Experienced trekkers can finish. But it’s intense with long hiking days. Standard trekking pace is 14–21 days to ensure acclimatization, safety, and enjoyment.

You will need to be physically, mentally, and emotionally fit for the Annapurna circuit, along with:

  • Able to walk 5–8 hours daily with altitude and a light backpack.
  • Good stamina for steep ascents and descents.
  • Some trekking experience or pre-trek training in cardio, strength, and endurance is highly recommended.

Annapurna Circuit is longer and has more variable terrain, including higher passes like Thorong La (5,416 m). Everest Base Camp is steep but shorter (12–14 days) with fewer passes. Annapurna Circuit also offers more cultural diversity and landscapes, which can make it more demanding physically.

The full Annapurna Circuit is approximately 160–230 km, depending on variations and side trips (like Tilicho Lake or Poon Hill). Daily distances vary between 10 and 20 km, often depending on terrain and elevation gain.

The hardest part of the Annapurna circuit is the Thorong La Pass (5,416 m) section due to:

  • High altitude and thin air.
  • Steep ascent from Muktinath or Thorong Phedi.
  • Cold, wind, and possible snow/ice.
  • Preparation, acclimatization, and pacing are essential for safely crossing.

A 40–50 litre backpack is sufficient for most trekkers, leaving room for:

  • Clothing layers.
  • Sleeping bag.
  • Water, snacks, camera, and essentials.
  • If carrying your own gear plus food for side trips or camping, a 50–60 litre pack may be better.

Additional Information

If you have limited time but still wish to explore the Annapurna region, you can opt for our alternative itinerary, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. This trek takes you directly to the heart of the Himalayas without following the entire Annapurna Circuit, allowing for a more direct trekking experience.

We have two options:

Annapurna base camp trek 13 Days

Annapurna base camp trek 7 Days

Staying connected and keeping your devices charged during the Annapurna Circuit trek does require some foresight, given the variation in electricity and WiFi access along the route.

Electricity

There is electricity available in most teahouses and lodges along the Annapurna Circuit for charging devices, though there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

Availability of power: Electricity tends to be regular in big villages like Manang, Jomsom, and Chame, but power would probably be limited or nonexistent in small villages and the countryside.

Cost of charging: Free charge at some lodges, with a minimal fee (typically 100–200 NPR per item) at others.

Power supplies: While the majority of lodges are supplied with electricity from the local grid, some are on solar power. During cloudy days, electricity from the sun can be limited, so charge things whenever electricity is available.

Adapter needs: Nepal uses 220V, 50Hz electricity with plug types C, D, and M. Carry a universal travel adapter to have all bases covered.

WiFi

Internet access is available in most teahouses, although occasionally slow or unreliable:

Availability: Tourist areas and larger towns like Manang, Pisang, and Jomsom will probably have WiFi, but there will be none in small villages.

Cost: WiFi is free to customers, but it could be slow. Some lodges will ask for a small fee for better connectivity.

Expectations: Do not anticipate using WiFi for heavy business or video calls. It will usually be adequate for messaging, emails, and general browsing.
